<image:caption>My other love besides Walkmans and cassettes, is turntables and vinyl records. My interest in older audio technology isn’t because I’m nostalgic or seek retro items, it’s because this what I have been using since I was young and don’t see why I need to change. I’ve amassed a lot of records and tapes and they still bring joy whenever I play them. Now this all seems to be coming back in “style”. More to come!</image:caption>

<image:title>Beyond Hockey - "WM-GX35 aka: Sorry Ma", acrylic paint and marker, 16" x 20", April 2024</image:title>
<image:caption>I recently received an artist grant to study and produce artwork based on portable cassette players/recorders, cassettes and the culture and music that surrounds it. It’s an ambitious project that will take a year to complete and this painting is the first of many to be part of the series. I’m pretty obsessed and driven by tapes and records already, so this will be a wild, spontaneous and very enjoyable “mixtape” of fun! Stay tuned!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Technically, this is not part of the Walkman Project, but I have so many more portable cassette players I want to paint, so I will continue. I own this one and it’s a heavy, bulky and rugged machine, that has an armored car kind of look to it. I think this would look very impressive on anyone’s living room wall. <image:title>Beyond Hockey - "Yellow Walkman" screen print/marker, 9" x 10.5", November 2023</image:title>
<image:caption>The iconic Sony Sports Walkman! I own three difference Sports versions and this one is pretty basic with no radio and a slick smooth finish. It still works, of course and I’ve started to walk around town listening to tapes again. Not that I ever stopped, but technology has gotten smaller, better sounding and wireless, but to me nothing beats the coolness of the Walkman! This was a screen print that needed a colour boost, so the bold brightness of acrylic markers helps. SOLD</image:caption>

I’ve amassed a huge record collection and there never seems to be enough time to listen as much as I want to. <image:caption>When the Winnipeg Jets host home games during the NHL playoffs, the fans dress in white to produce a whiteout effect. This has been tradition since the Jets were in the league (the first time) during the 80’s and 90’s. The energy and pure white noise from the crowd is a phenomenon Jets fans are proud of. This print captures some of that energy and experience. Go Jets! paper size: 9 1/2” x 13” Available for sale on the Etsy page or message me. $75.00 (unframed)</image:caption>

<image:caption>Each print I did in this run is totally different. For the first prints I used red ink and I gradually added black (without cleaning the roller), so the effect with red mixed with black. The image here is the middle range, that looks a bit like bunnies prancing around in flames. Well, at least that’s I thought at the time. Most of the prints in this series are available and I’ll post soon in the blog section the different colour variants (red>black). $50.00 (unframed) inquires, message me.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I’ve been feeling nostalgic recently, so I’ve been drawing things that make me happy and who doesn’t love a boombox! I got this Pioneer boombox in the early 80’s and it changed my life! Music became more portable and I could blast tunes in my room, outside, road-trips, anywhere! I’ve even recorded my own music on this unit and it sounds terrific! It still sounds great, so here’s a tribute to my rockin’ boombox! paper size 9.5 x 11.5 Available on my Etsy page or message me here. $60 (unframed) price just reduced!</image:caption>

The image of Calgary Flames goalie, Miikka Kiprusoff is acrylic paint printed on off-white acid-free paper. This is a monoprint, as each print differs greatly from each other, both in colour and effect. Some turned out better than others, this is a really good one! <image:caption>Colour block print (monoprint) that was produced in a very limited number of prints. They are uniquely slightly different from each other, as they are hand painted blocks then pressed onto paper. The image of the Montreal Canadian’s, Ken Dryden resonates with a certain age demographic, which I was definitely part of. This is one of my most popular prints and I only one or so left... NEW! <image:title>Prints - "So Much Depends Upon..." lithograph, 11" x 14", 1986</image:title>
<image:caption>New, old stock litho from art school that I have only a few left. A themed project with our lithography class and the intaglio class where we created our interpretation of the title. We exchanged prints so everyone received one print from every class member, what a great idea! My interpretation was a literal translation, pretty obvious, right? If you’re unfamiliar with lithography, I drew the image directly onto a thick large smooth stone with a litho (grease) pencil. A bunch of chemicals are rubbed into the image then it’s inked up and rolled through an ancient looking press, $60 CDN unframed.</image:caption>

<image:title>Hockey Art - "Bernie!", acrylic paint, 18" x 24", September 2025</image:title>
<image:caption>This painting is a tribute to one of the greatest goalies from the 60’s & 70’s, Bernie Parent. He backstopped the Philadelphia Flyers to back to back cups in (1973-74, 1974-75), winning the Conn Smythe (MVP of the playoffs) and Vezina (top goalie), both seasons. When I heard the news of Bernie’s passing, I immediately began the piece and completed it within two weeks, which for me is pretty quick. His iconic mask, along with the brilliant orange of the Flyers jersey makes the piece quite striking and attention grabbing. I’m happy how it turned out!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Women’s hockey is getting it’s well deserved moment now, with the new Professional Women’s Hockey League, drawing big crowds and getting much needed media and broadcast coverage. I did a similar image a few years ago, with an aerial shot of a previous team in watercolour. This time it’s colour pencil on black paper, which gives it dramatic look. I like how it turned out, but unfortunately, it looks better in person as the photo mutes a lot of the intense colour.</image:caption>

I don’t think he received the respect and accolades he deserved, playing in era where he literally took it “old school” in the face. I depicted him later in his career when he wore a mask, but rest assured he was one of the most brave and gutsiest players to lace on the pads! His mask was distinctive and unique with stitch marks painted on his mask every time he got hit in the face. Yes, I drew him in pen and usually on the my notebooks, textbooks and desk. <image:title>Hockey Art - "Rocky Favell" acrylic marker on wood, 8" x 10", September 2021</image:title>
<image:caption>Doug Favell was one of the first goalies to paint his mask. The colours usually matched the team he was playing for and they were always interesting. The complete piece is drawn with acrylic markers, so the colours and highlights really stand out. I really like this piece!</image:caption>

<image:title>Hockey Art - "Espo" acrylic marker on canvas, 8" x 10", April 2021</image:title>
<image:caption>First attempt using acrylic markers. It gives it a graphic style and because the markers are so opaque, the colours stand out nicely. These could be very useful in the future, once I use them more.</image:caption>

<image:title>Hockey Art - "Dryden Mask" acrylic paint on canvas, 8" x 10", May 2020</image:title>
<image:caption>Ken Dryden’s first NHL mask, the pretzel-style which looks like it didn’t offer up a lot of protection. He only wore it a couple seasons, but it is often what he is remembered with. An early painting when I started to paint the faces inside the mask.</image:caption>

<image:title>Hockey Art - "Orr Scores!" ink wash/watercolour, 11.25" x 16", April 2021</image:title>
<image:caption>Another commission piece, featuring the classic Stanley Cup winning Bobby Orr goal. Most of the painting is in grey (b & w) shade to emphasize the vintage look of the time period (1970) and highlight, Orr and the lone “misplaced” Leafs fan in the crowd (the recipient of the gift) with colour. I thought it turned out well, not so sure what the Leafs fan thought. SOLD</image:caption>

<image:title>Hockey Art - "Scheifele Drives The Net" watercolour, 12" x 18", March 2021</image:title>
<image:caption>This was my first commission piece for a Winnipeg Jets fan & Bruins fan. I’m always comfortable painting in watercolour and it was a good choice of medium for this piece. I’m open for custom commission pieces, especially hockey-related. SOLD</image:caption>

<image:title>Hockey Art - "Big Save Crow" watercolour, 12" x 18", October 2020</image:title>
<image:caption>A tribute to Chicago Blackhawks goalie, Corey Crawford who announced his surprise retirement on January 9, 2021. “Crow” was instrumental for backstopping the Hawks to two of their Stanley Cups in the 2010’s. The energy and excitement he brought to the United Center will not be the same.</image:caption>

<image:title>Hockey Art - "Crashing The Blue Paint" watercolour, 12" x 18", May 2020</image:title>
<image:caption>Watercolour is a fantastic medium for hockey, it’s an opportunity to use a washy effect for the ice surface, which tends to be more of a blue tone than white (even outside the “blue paint” area). I tend to find the aerial view an interesting angle.</image:caption>

<image:title>Hockey Art - "Faceoff" watercolour, 11" x 14", April 2020</image:title>
<image:caption>The first watercolour during the beginning of COVID and when I quit my day job to do art full-time. It had been a while since I painted a watercolour piece, so it was a re-learning experience. I’m pleased how it turned out, now I’m hooked!</image:caption>

My dad brought it back from Japan in the early 80’s around the time the Sony machines mass arrived in North America. This machine is the highest quality and solidly built machine I own. <image:caption>This particular Walkman, I used to make live concert recordings in the 1990’s. It made decent recordings considering it wasn’t digital and was recorded on cassette tapes. It was reliable though and always gave me a big rush of fun when in action. Great memories!</image:caption>

<image:title>The Walkman Art Project - "WM-GX35 aka: Sorry Ma" acrylic paint & marker, 16" x 20", April 2024</image:title>
<image:caption>This is the first completed piece for The Walkman Art Project, created from the Japanese Canadian Legacies Society Grant I received in April 2024. This grant allowed me to work almost exclusively on this project, which was completed in July 2025. The project studied and produced artwork based on portable cassette players/recorders, cassettes and the culture and music that surrounds it. It was an ambitious project that took a year to complete and this painting is the first of many that was part of the series. I’m pretty obsessed and driven by tapes and records already, so this was a wild, spontaneous and very enjoyable “mixtape” of fun!</image:caption>
